ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess whether there was an increase in alcohol consumption during the Covid-19 pandemic period by the population over 18 years. Methods: Analytical, cross-sectional, and qualitative study, carried out from an online form on the Google Forms platform. The form was sent and disseminated by electronic means and answered by 700 individuals of both sexes aged 18 years or older, in June 2020. Results: A significant increase in individuals who did not consume alcoholic beverages before social distancing and began to consume them during this period (p<0.0001) was identified, as well as an increase in the amount of alcohol consumed (p<0.001), so signifi- cant that part of those who had low or moderate consumption started to have high alcohol consumption (p=0.0003). There was also an association with female sex (p<0.0001) and age between 18 and 27 years (p=0.0010) and 28 and 37 years (p=0.0006). Conclusion: There was an increase in alcohol consumption during the Covid-19 pandemic period in the population analyzed in ge- neral, with this increase in consumption by the young population and in the female sex being highlighted.
